GovDeals (govdeals.com) is a commercial online auction marketplace operated by Liquidity Services that lets government and public-sector entities — state and local governments, school districts, transit authorities, public utilities, and federal agencies — sell surplus and confiscated property to the public. It is not a federal system, but it is now the successor channel for Government Liquidation, Liquidity Services' former DoD-surplus marketplace.

What it is

GovDeals runs a public online auction marketplace where participating government agencies list surplus assets (vehicles, equipment, real estate, and other property) for competitive bidding. Buyers register as accounts, browse and bid on listings, and pay a buyer's premium on top of the winning bid; sellers set their own terms per listing. The platform is owned and operated by Liquidity Services (Liquidity Services Operations LLC, doing business as GovDeals), a publicly traded company (Nasdaq: LQDT) headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.

Who operates it

GovDeals is a commercial marketplace, not a U.S. Government-run system. It is owned by Liquidity Services Operations LLC, a subsidiary of Liquidity Services, Inc. (Nasdaq: LQDT). Its customer base is described by the operator as primarily state and local government agencies — cities, counties, school boards, transit authorities, and public utilities — and it also serves federal agencies.

Access

GovDeals is publicly reachable and open to any buyer who creates a free account and provides a valid payment method; no CAC or federal credential is required. New accounts start with limited purchase amounts and unlock higher limits after a track record of completed transactions. There is no login or agency affiliation requirement to browse listings — only to bid.

How logisticians use it

Federal and military logisticians researching government surplus disposal channels should note that GovDeals now serves federal agencies as well as state and local governments. For Department of Defense surplus specifically, DLA Disposition Services manages reutilization, transfer, and donation of excess property first. Usable, non-rolling-stock property approved for public sale was historically sold through Government Liquidation, which Liquidity Services has folded into GovDeals (Government Liquidation accounts carried over); DoD rolling stock sells separately through GovPlanet, an IronPlanet/Ritchie Bros. marketplace that is not part of Liquidity Services. No reachable public DLA page currently names these marketplaces, so this split is sourced from the operators themselves; treat DLA Disposition Services as the authority on the DoD disposal process.

Related systems

See DLA Disposition Services for the authoritative DoD surplus reutilization/transfer/donation/sale process, and GovPlanet for DoD rolling-stock sales; Government Liquidation's former DoD-surplus sales now run through GovDeals itself.
